Recently fourteen hospitals in California have been fined for serious medical negligence. Seven of the fourteen hospitals were fined for leaving surgical tools inside of the patients’ bodies. Other mistakes include improper administration of medicines, and serious birth injuries, including Cerebral Palsy, due to negligence during delivery.
The large, well known hospitals include Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, LAC & USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, Fresno Surgical Hospital, San Francisco General Hospital, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, Kaiser Foundation Hospital in South San Francisco, Sutter Solano Medical Center in Vallejo, Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital, St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton, Torrance Memorial Medical Center, UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, Ventura County Medical Center, and Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.
On December 8, 2011 the California Department of Public Health created a medical error fines, ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. Hospitals will now be fined for medical negligence that puts patients’ lives in danger. Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, with six prior administration penalties, and Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo, with four prior administration penalties, received the largest fines of $100,000, of the fourteen hospitals fined in California.
