Last week, the FDA announced their decision to revoke Avastin’s approval for breast cancer treatment.This decision comes after a review showing Avastin does little to help breast cancer patients; the FDA feels the number of potential Avastin side effects outweigh the limited medical benefits to breast cancer patients.

The Swiss drug maker Roche has refused to voluntarily withdraw Avastin’s breast cancer indication and plans to hold a public hearing challenging the decision.The FDA’s ruling will likely cost Roche hundreds of millions of dollars.

Although many cancer patients have opposed the FDA’s decision to remove Avastin’s breast cancer indication, cancer specialists have said Avastin has not shown enough significant benefits to justify the drug’s approval.According to Dr. Albert Braverman, chief of oncology at State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, “The bottom line is that it doesn’t work very well…I’ve seen the occasional patient have a brief remission, which is nice, but it’s certainly not doing anything important. It’s not saving anyone’s life.”
