  • Calaxo Screw Lawsuit - Attorneys Fighting for the Victims of Defective Calaxo Screws

When someone tears his or her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), that person generally needs knee reconstruction surgery in order to put the joint back together and to ultimately restore stability to the injured knee. Absent this surgery in many cases, patients will suffer from a lifetime of issues with their 'trick knee' such that it will not have the stability needed to move normally and could collapse at any time.

ACL surgery is relatively new to the medical world, and as a result many new products hit the market in an effort to aid in the surgical and recovery process. One such product was known as the Calaxo screw, and its intended use and problems encountered are detailed below. If you have suffered as a result of depending on this product, contact Parilman & Associates today to schedule a free initial consultation.

    Calaxo Screw Information

The Calaxo screw was initially approved for use in the United States in 2006, and is manufactured by the Endoscopy division of Smith & Nephew. Its use is such that when an ACL surgery is performed, a screw is needed to hold the tendon graft in place after the surgery in order to prevent subsequent tearing until the new tendon heals to the point where it can sustain itself. Given the limited/temporary need for such a bracing aid, the screw is supposed to dissolve into the patient's system by itself after a short period of time.

    Problems Arise

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before serious problems began to arise in association with the Calaxo screw. Reports began to surface that an unreasonably high number of patients had the screws break inside of their legs, and this led to serious problems as a result. Those who had these screws break often experienced a relatively rare condition known as pre-tibial soft tissue swelling. This condition led to pain, swelling, scar tissue forming and ultimately the need for additional surgical intervention in order to clean out the new scarring and tissue that had been all but destroyed by the screw fragments.

In 2007, only a year after being approved, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to announce a recall of all models and lots of these Calaxo screws given their obvious tendencies to create serious side effects and potential dangers in patients who had used them in their surgeries.
