  • Parilman & Associates - Helping Victims of the Defective Crib Recall

Every infant needs a crib, and given the millions of babies born around the world, this is a product line that almost always has a high degree of demand. There are almost as many different forms of cribs as there are automobiles, each tailored to a different set of needs and expectations. One of the more popular forms of cribs sold in recent years is a form that's collapsible and therefore somewhat portable for travel and moving.

Unfortunately, serious defects were soon found in some of these cribs, prompting a massive recall to prevent further injuries and deaths. Below is a brief overview of the issue, but if your child has suffered as a result of a defective crib, contact the attorneys at Parilman & Associates today to schedule a free initial consultation.

    The Products at Issue

The products at the center of this terrible situation involve the companies known as Simplicity, Inc., which is generally listed as the manufacturer of these problematic cribs and Graco, which was the brand name under which these products were sold. These cribs were marketed as comfortable and convenient in that parents could take them along when they traveled and fold them into a smaller size.

    Serious Problems Arise

Unfortunately, it wasn't long before tragic reports began to surface in regards to the use of these products. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) ultimately got involved after it was discovered that there was a manufacturing error with these cribs. Specifically, the side panels of the models at issue were installed upside-down, creating a high degree of danger.

This danger involved the infants rolling over onto the side of the mattress and becoming entrapped in the space between the mattress and the side netting, a space that would not have been there had the products been manufactured properly. A few children died from suffocation and dozens of other reports were filed stating that the side panel fell off when it encountered pressure. As a result, the CPSC announced the recall of one million units of these cribs in 2007. The specific models recalled were:
