Helping Victims of Gadolinium Caused NSF

Millions of people need MRI's for assorted injuries and diseases, as this relatively new technology has allowed the medical community to make much more accurate and timely diagnoses of those who have health problems. In short, the MRI technology has saved lives, and even after it became a mainstream part of any medical offering, companies began to research ways in which the MRI could be improved.

One of the ways in which this happened was the introduction of gadolinium-based contrast agents to be used in accordance with MRI scans. This agent allowed for an even more detailed MRI result that only increased the opportunity for doctors and other health professionals to notice problems.

However, it wasn't long before serious problems began to arise for those who used a gadolinium-based contrast agent in their MRI's. If this has happened to you, contact the trial attorneys at the law firm of Parilman & Associates today to schedule a free initial consultation. In the meantime, below you'll find a brief overview of the issue.

    Gadolinium

Gadolinium is an element that appears on the international periodic table. Its basic qualities are such that it works easily both in terms of its contrasting visual qualities and the ease with which it can be formulated into a substance that's injected into a patient before an MRI. The intended benefit of these products was to create more contrast in the MRI results that only made a diagnosis easier in the visual sense.

    NSF

However, as gadolinium-containing contrast agents gained more market share, more reports of serious problems began to arise. Specifically, several cases of a rare disease known as Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF), sometimes referred to as Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD) were diagnosed in a short period of time.

The common links that wase discovered was that those who suffered from this disease had all received gadolinium-based contrast agents prior to an MRI. NSF/NSD is a serious disease that tends to attack the skin, leading to painful calcification. The most troubling aspect of NSF/NSD is that it can also attack internal organs and lead to renal failure, which requires kidney dialysis and in some cases transplants.

The FDA ultimately got involved by issuing a public health warning and named several brand-named contrast agents that contained gadolinium. These included:
    • Omniscan
    • OptiMARK
    • Magnevist
    • ProHance
    • MultiHance
