Fighting for the Rights of those Harmed by Heparin

When people need surgery, most specifically heart surgery and kidney dialysis, blood clotting that's naturally executed by the body can present a danger for many reasons. As a result, products have long been available to doctors that allow them to prevent new blood clotting while performing these procedures, hypothetically reducing the risks that present themselves with clotting.

However, some of these products have come under intense scrutiny due to the side effects to which they have been linked. One of those products that drew the public's ire was Heparin, a prominent anti-clotting medication that generated multiple reports of serious side effects. If you or someone you love has suffered as a result of using Heparing, contact Parilman & Associates today to schedule a free initial consultation.

    Heparin Specifics

Heparin has been around since the early 1930's. Given its long duration on the market, it's grown in prevalence to the point where millions of people have had it administered to them annually. For the most part, Heparin did not present any unreasonable risks to patients, which was another reason for its long-time success. Its ability to prevent additional clotting allowed for much more successful procedures on the whole.

    Problems Arise

Unfortunately, problems eventually arose with the use of Heparin. Towards the end of 2007, reports began to surface that severe side effects began to arise in those who had used Heparin. It was eventually discovered that Baxter Healthcare Corporation, the manufacturer of Heparin, had been outsourcing the manufacture of Heparin to a lab in China. The FDA had never been able to inspect this lab, and it turned out to be enormously harmful to more than 300 patients.

Specifically, the Heparin manufactured at this lab was problematic because of the severe allergic reactions it caused that it never had before. These reactions included:
  • Breathing difficult,
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Falling blood pressure Worst of all, four people died as a result of these allergic reactions, most of which were because of shock from the falling blood pressure. The FDA has since required Baxter to halt sales of Heparin until additional investigations can be done.
