Fighting for those Injured by Paxil

Countless people in the United States suffer from some form of depression and/or anxiety. It's only recently that these conditions have gained status and have been taken seriously, as many used to simply dismiss those who suffered from these problems as 'having the blues' or being 'tightly wound.' In fact, these are serious medical problems that can debilitate a person on several levels.
Pharmaceutical companies recognized this growing prevalence of depression and anxiety and began to formulate medications designed to treat and to help manage them. One of the leading medications that hit the market in recent years was Paxil, but this drug encountered serious problems when reports of side effects began to surface. If you or someone you love has suffered as a result of using Paxil, contact the defective drugs lawyers at Parilman & Associates today to schedule a free initial consultation. Below is a brief overview of Paxil and its surrounding issues.

    Paxil Information

Paxil is manufactured by SmithKline Beecham and is a member of a class of drugs known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI's). Other SSRI's include Prozac, Zoloft, Luvox and Celexa, although Paxil is unique from these drugs because its chemical makeup. Paxil was originally approved for sale by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1999, and it sold quite well for a period of years, as its purpose was to help control the symptoms of depression and anxiety and other disorders that fell within those umbrellas, such as social anxiety disorder.

    Problems Arise

However, Paxil began making news a few years later for negative reasons. Reports of serious side effects began to surface, and their severity was such that it prompted the medical community and ultimately the FDA to pay attention to the drug's effects on those taking it. These side effects were mostly centered on pregnant women who were taking the drug, particularly during their first trimester of pregnancy.

Several birth defects were found in the children of the mothers who were using the medication, and these included:
    • Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN) - PPHN is a lung condition that is extremely dangerous in newborns. Basically, PPHN raises the pressure in the lungs and makes it quite difficult for oxygen to circulate through the system. It can be fatal, but often requires intensive medical care.

    • Heart birth defects - Several studies showed that pregnant women who used Paxil during their first trimester had a high number of children with heart-related birth defects, specifically atrial or ventricular septal defects, conditions in which the wall between the right and left sides of the heart is not properly developed, creating the need for invasive surgery.
Other birth defects have been linked to Paxil, and the FDA has since issued more than one public warning regarding the dangers associated with this medication. If you have suffered as a result of using Paxil, contact Parilman & Associates today to schedule a free initial consultation.
