A new study has concluded that men who take testosterone medication for the first time face a heightened risk of suffering heart attacks when compared to men who don’t use this medication.  This conclusion only adds to the growing body of information linking this medication to risks of heart attacks.  Several studies have also indicated that men who underdo ‘TRT’ or testosterone replacement therapy face an increased risk of suffering strokes.  The information in these different studies has been used as evidence in testosterone replacement therapy lawsuits across the United States.  This new study could soon be used as evidence as well by those who have been harmed by this medication.

The study was published in January, and it was done by researchers at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.  A link to the study can be found here.  It was a massive study that analyzed health information and records for 934,283 men between the ages of 45 and 80.  The study found that there was not a statistically significant increase in the risk of a heart attack for men who were already using one of these drugs.  However, the researchers discovered that first-time users of testosterone medication were 41 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack than men who were not undergoing TRT.

Evidence of Testosterone Therapy Side Effects Summarized

In recent years, some of the studies that have been published with regards to testosterone replacement therapy have concluded the following:

  1. 41 percent increased risk of heart attacks for first-time users of the medication
  2. Double the risk of heart attacks for men over the age of 65 who were undergoing TRT
  3. Double the risk of heart attacks for men younger than 65 with any history of heart problems
  4. Higher likelihood of older men undergoing TRT after an angiography to suffer heart attacks

The FDA has weighed in on the topic relatively recently.  The agency stated that at this point there are instances where testosterone medication is overused.  Overuse of these drugs clearly increases the risk of harm for patients.

About Testosterone Lawsuits

Several testosterone replacement therapy lawsuits have been filed around the United States against the manufacturers of popular medications such as Testim, Axiron and Androgel.  These lawsuits have been consolidated on the federal level for pretrial matters.  This is a relatively rare step, as most of the time lawsuits are consolidated when many are filed against one defendant or one set of defendants.  These testosterone lawsuits have been filed against several different manufacturers such as AbbVie, Inc. and others.
