NECC Meningitis Side Effects

Millions of people around the United States suffer from some form of neck, arm, back and/or leg pain because of a problem with their spinal nerves. Usually, the problem traces to the inflammation of these nerves that can lead to pain and discomfort in other areas of the body. There is no pill that’s designed to treat the spinal cord, but people who face this difficulty can and often do decide to obtain epidural steroid injections. These injections help to reduce the inflammation of the spinal nerves and ultimately they lower the amount of pain and misery endured by patients.

One company in particular was penetrating the growing market for epidural injections across the United States in recent years, and it is known as the New England Compounding Center, or the NECC. The NECC prepared and sold these epidural spinal injections to outlets across the United States and at its height some analysts estimate that the pharmacy was generating approximately $100 million per year in revenue. Unfortunately for many people, serious problems soon began to arise for NECC and patients based on harm that was allegedly inflicted by these steroid injections.

Specifically, people began to report cases of fungal meningitis after having these injections administered. These injections that were prepared by the NECC contained preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate. It has been alleged that several lots of this medication were tainted and many have since been recalled. These recalled lots include:

  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #05212012@68, BUD 11/17/2012
  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #06292012@26, BUD 12/26/2012
  • Methylprednisolone Acetate (PF) 80 mg/ml Injection, Lot #08102012@51, BUD 2/6/2013

At this point, at least 700 people across 20 states have contracted fungal meningitis or some other serious illness that allegedly was caused by this steroid injection product.

NECC meningitis lawsuits have been filed in several different federal court jurisdictions, and it’s possible that the entire matter could be consolidated into what is known as multi-district litigation. That’s largely because people who suffer from fungal meningitis face a challenging and dangerous time as they fight to overcome harm that’s been done to their brains. If you have used any of these products and you have experienced any or all of the following symptoms, you need to obtain an immediate medical evaluation:

  • Severe headaches
  • High fevers
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Stiff neck
  • Pain in your neck
  • Drowsiness
  • General confusion
  • Sensitivity to bright lights

These could be indicative of fungal meningitis. This is a condition that can be treated with time, medication and close oversight, but it needs to be treated aggressively and promptly. Cases of fungal meningitis that continue undiagnosed can lead to serious damage to a person’s brain and/or spinal cord, and in some cases it can be fatal.
