Ask any medical professional about the biggest risk the average person in the United States faces in terms of his or her future health and risk of death, and that professional will probably provide an answer that deals with the heart. Heart attacks, strokes and other problems are known as cardiac events, and these are clearly not positive in nature. Instead, they are dangerous and for years they were largely unforeseen by people who suffered through them. Fortunately, recent years in the medical research world have led to enormous breakthroughs with regards to medication that’s available, and many of these medications have provided people with the safety and comfort they needed.
One company to come out with a product designed to protect against cardiac events is Bristol-Myers Squibb. This company formed a partnership with Sanofi-Aventis, a French company, and the two of them collaborated to release a medication known as Plavix. Plavix was designed to protect a patient’s heart, and it was highly successful. Over the years, the medication generated several billion dollars in revenue and it was largely seen as a success in terms of its results.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before serious problems and allegations of Plavix side effects began to arise. Plavix is generally taken with aspirin to help protect the heart from enduring future cardiac events, and many people who have already suffered a heart attack or something along those lines use it. Two studies were done, however, that concluded that the use of these two medications together led to serious risks of permanent if not life-threatening harm. Each of these studies is briefly described below:
- New England Journal of Medicine study – The NEJM published a study that concluded that the use of Plavix with aspirin failed to protect patients from suffering second heart attacks. In addition, the study concluded that using these two medications concurrently actually doubled the risk of patients suffering another cardiac event.
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) study – Another study that was released actually did not even progress to the point where it reached a definitive conclusion. That’s because the study was stopped when it became clear to researchers that subjects who were using Plavix with aspirin faced an increased risk of internal bleeding and even death.
Clearly, Plavix side effects present an enormous danger to the people who have used this medication to protect themselves from cardiac events.
